Burton Demolition

I had a disappointing experience with Burton Demolition. Following the demolition of my property, I discovered that the water meter tap had been left running. When I attended the site several days later, a large area of the ground was saturated and water was still flowing. I turned the tap off myself and recorded the meter reading. When I returned several weeks later, the reading had not changed, indicating that the excessive water usage had stopped once the tap was closed. As a result, I received an unusually high water bill. SA Water estimated approximately 139kL of water wastage and a large bill. What disappointed me most was not the mistake itself, but the lack of willingness to take responsibility for it despite the photos, meter readings, and supporting information I provided. I paid all additional costs that arose during the demolition process without dispute, so I expected the same level of accountability when an issue occurred on their side. Unfortunately, that was not my experience.

Burton Demolition completed our large and complex demolition project, including a cellar and pool removal/compaction, efficiently and on schedule. Their pricing was competitive, and the team was responsive and helpful throughout the process, answering our questions promptly. The demolition work itself was completed to a high standard, and we appreciate the effort of the team. While asbestos was discovered during the project and increased costs, we understand that unforeseen issues can arise. Our main concern was a 10% fuel levy that was introduced during the project. Given the project was already expensive and the asbestos discovery had significantly increased the overall cost, the additional 10% fuel levy felt quite high, particularly as it had not been discussed prior to signing the contract. Another concern was that we were only advised late in the process about the potential risk of damage to neighbouring fencing and paving during the pool removal and compaction works. To Burton’s credit, they took all necessary precautions and no damage occurred. However, being asked to accept responsibility for any potential damage after the project was already underway created unnecessary stress and would have been better discussed before work commenced. Overall, Burton did a great job, and clearer upfront communication regarding additional costs and potential risks would have made the experience even better.
